The First Peoples Principles of Learning (FFPL) are 10 fundamental pillars of Indigenous education. They emphasize the need for experiential, relational, and holistic approaches to learning, capstones that may be missed by traditional European paradigms of teaching. The FPPL is a framework that can be implemented into classrooms seamlessly with the B.C. curriculum, and they’re principles that I’ve connected with on a deep level. Whether it be focusing on the individual, community, or the land, the FPPLs are organically inclusive and span far past the classroom. They’ve been ever-present in my Bachelor of Education journey, and I plan to utilize them appropriately and respectfully in my practice.
